To support the launch of its new commemorative £5 coin inspired by Sir Isaac Newton, The Royal Mint partnered with Candyspace to build "The Great British Treasure Hunt"- a five-level cryptographic campaign engineered to convert passive consumers into active digital participants.
Delivered within a strict 10-week agile timeline alongside design agency Bison Bison, we created a secure freemium experience that turned the physical coin and its packaging into a live decryption tool. By gating advanced gameplay behind account creation, the activation captured public imagination, causing the coin to practically sell out within its first week while generating 57,000 unique players, 3,000 new CRM registrations, and a 90% game completion rate.

BUSINESS NEED
CUSTOMER DEMAND
As The Royal Mint continues its digital transformation into a modern ecommerce and financial services brand, product drops represent a vital opportunity to engage new demographics. However, traditional retail marketing often results in passive, transactional purchases without establishing a long-term digital relationship with the buyer.
For the launch of the commemorative £5 coin honoring Sir Isaac Newton, The Royal Mint wanted to break the mold of standard mint releases. The challenge was to create a digital-first activation that would elevate a physical product launch into a national cultural moment - driving direct sales while systematically capturing first-party customer data to expand their high-value collector base.
Candyspace's remit and objectives Candyspace was appointed to design, architect, and build the digital ecosystem for "The Great British Treasure Hunt". Our core objective was to create a freemium acquisition model that seamlessly connected the physical product with a secure digital experience on royalmint.com.
Working in close collaboration with agency Bison Bison - who created the coin design, physical puzzles, and packaging - Candyspace was tasked with delivering the entire digital experience within a strict 10-week timeline. Our remit included:
Designing a mobile-first, low-friction digital UI for a dedicated microsite.
Architecting a custom, unhackable backend data platform to track player progress.
Integrating the gameplay directly into The Royal Mint's existing account registration and CRM framework.
Ensuring complete digital security for a high-stakes competition offering a grand prize of a 250g solid gold bar valued at up to £29,000.

Candyspace deployed a cross-functional agile squad comprising product managers, UX/UI designers, full-stack engineers, and QA specialists to deliver the 10-week build.
At the center of our technical delivery was a freemium progression funnel. Level 1 was hosted as a free-to-play microsite to maximize initial public reach. To unlock Levels 2 through 5, players were required to purchase the physical coin and log into or create a Royal Mint account.
Key deliverables and innovations included:
14 Co-Created Cryptographic Puzzles: Engineered across five distinct, escalating tiers mapped to Isaac Newton's scientific experiments:
Level 1 (Discovery): A free gateway featuring four entry-level puzzles (including a cryptex challenge) introducing the Newton theme and circulating coinage.
Level 2 (Explorer): Required the physical coin and packaging, taking players through augmented reality and cypher challenges.
Level 3 (Decoder): Forced close examination of physical details, utilizing glow-in-the-dark elements and edge inscriptions.
Level 4 (Mastermind): Advanced problem-solving challenges designed for dedicated cryptographers.
Level 5 (Genius): The grand finale combining physical clues, enigmatic glyphs, and multi-layered codebreaking.
High-Security Progress Engine: Because players were competing for a £29,000 gold bar, standard front-end logic was rejected in favor of a hardened, custom backend database that validated every answer server-side to prevent spoofing or script-hacking.
Seamless CRM & Ecommerce Integration: Connected front-end puzzle progression dynamically with backend customer accounts, converting game unlocks into direct DTC store purchases.

By treating a physical coin as a digital key, Candyspace and The Royal Mint transformed a standard product drop into a nationwide viral event. Thousands of users formed online forum communities to solve the cryptographic codes collaboratively, generating extensive press coverage and organic social buzz.
The activation delivered exceptional commercial and digital returns:
Immediate Commercial Acceleration: Over 15,000 coins and medals were sold, causing the product to practically sell out within its first week on sale.
First-Party Data Capture: Successfully onboarded 3,000 new registered customer accounts directly into The Royal Mint's CRM database.
Unprecedented Engagement: Achieved an extraordinary 90% completion rate across all five puzzle levels among participating account holders, demonstrating the strength of the mobile-first UX design.
Robust Platform Security: Handled peak launch traffic and multi-level data validation smoothly with zero security breaches or game-integrity compromises.
The campaign proved that gamification, when underpinned by enterprise-grade backend engineering, can turn physical product marketing into a highly profitable, data-rich acquisition strategy.
